The canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden plans to introduce new parking measures to help manage high volumes of tourists. The plans include a new booking system and the eye-watering high price of 30 Swiss francs a day to park in a field.
Appenzell Innerrhoden to introduce “hefty” parking fees and regulations
The Appenzell Innerrhoden Cantonal Council has proposed a new parking guidance and reservation system, along with cantonal-wide parking fees, as high numbers of tourists continue to flock to the canton.
In the proposal, a car parking spot for a day “on a meadow will cost 30 Swiss francs - a new Swiss record”, reports Blick. It will be even higher at 50 Swiss francs for an overnight stay and 100 Swiss francs for coaches.
A new parking system called PARES will also be introduced. Visitors will have to reserve a spot in advance or be advised on alternative locations if car parks become full.
Appenzell Innerrhoden, in the east of Switzerland, is home to the well-known Alpstein mountains. Aescher, Ebenalp, Seealpsee, and Säntis have become popular destinations for both foreign tourists and locals.
Increased parking prices divide opinions
High parking prices can be common in major Swiss cities, such as Zurich or Geneva, but as Blick writes, “you can park your car in a parking garage there, not on the meadow”. The high parking prices could be a concern for hotels, mountain railways, and hikers, as many may choose alternative, cheaper places to visit.
Many, however, are in agreement that something needs to be done to address the high traffic and tourist levels, as “other measures have had little effect”. Speaking to the Appenzeller Zeitung, the head of the Innerrhoden district court commented that “traffic is a burden on the affected population”, and “we can only achieve control through price”.
If successful, the proposal will be implemented in 2026.
