French-speaking cantons of Switzerland are turning into the country’s new economic powerhouse, according to recent Federal Statistical Office (FSO) figures on cantonal GDP. The Lake Geneva region has now officially overtaken Zurich as the country's strongest economic engine.

Geneva and Vaud outpace Zurich’s economic output

The Lake Geneva region, which includes the cantons Geneva, Vaud and Valais, is now outperforming Switzerland’s financial hub of Zurich. New calculations by the FSO are “causing a stir”, reports Blick, as collectively the three cantons generated 190 billion Swiss francs in 2024, 23 billion more francs than the 167 billion francs in Zurich.

Even without Valais, Geneva and Vaud alone generated 168 billion francs, edging past Zurich despite having roughly 200.000 fewer residents.

When comparing cantonal economic output per capita, Zurich ranks sixth place. It has been outperformed by Neuchâtel, which boasts a GDP of 142.993 francs per resident compared to Zurich's 103.442 francs.

The recent FSO calculations shift from analysing economic output based on a canton’s employment figures to now recording “where companies actually operate” and the “value added in each canton.” This allows for a more geographically representative picture across Switzerland.

Zurich defends its status amid corporate relocations

The figures come shortly after two companies announced they were relocating offices out of Zurich. Swiss bank Vontobel is set to move its headquarters to Baar, Zug, while Cembra is heading to the town of Baden, Aargau. Combined, the two changes will lead to 2.160 fewer jobs in Zurich.

Despite this, Zurich remains, for now at least, the “strongest single canton”, making up roughly 20 percent of Switzerland’s overall economic output. A representative from the Zurich Department of Economic Affairs told Blick that “As by far the largest economic canton, Zurich is already operating at a very high level [...] There is no other canton that even comes close to this figure.”
