2026 US midterms: how Americans in Switzerland can vote

Vote in Us Elections From Abroad 2026

Every US citizen living in Switzerland is eligible to vote in the 2026 midterms. With federal elections taking place in every state, overseas ballots from Switzerland could determine key Congressional margins. Here is how to make sure your vote counts.

Follow these simple steps to request and return your ballot on time:

1. Request your ballot now. Go to VoteFromAbroad.org and submit a request today. The most common reason overseas votes go uncounted is waiting until the deadline is near and assuming there is still time.

2. Choose email delivery, not postal mail. US postal mail is slow and unreliable this year. You have the right to receive your ballot by email - use it! Do this today so your vote will be counted.

3. Return it electronically if your state allows it. Many states accept ballots returned by online upload, e-fax, or email. Unsure about fax? Here's how to e-fax a ballot.

4. Get help if you need it. Voting from abroad can feel confusing the first, second, or fifth time. Have questions? The Voter Support team at Democrats Abroad offers in-person help from humans, not AI. You can reach them via chat, email support, and live on Zoom at Zoom the Vote sessions.

Your vote is your superpower

History has shown that the overseas vote can change the outcome of US elections.

Whether it’s a local school board, a seat in Congress, or the winner of the presidential election, overseas votes have carried candidates into office by as few as 156 votes.  With control of the House and Senate and dozens of open seats in play, 2026 is shaping up as another year when the margin may be razor-thin.

US citizens living abroad experience firsthand the real impact on the country, its residents, and its standing worldwide. This damage is real and accelerating. US voters can reverse it, but only if voters show up.

What's actually on the line

This is not a routine midterm. The scale of what is on the ballot is considerable:

  • All 435 US House seats
  • 35 Senate seats: the 33 regular Class II seats, plus special elections in Florida and Ohio
  • Governorships in 36 states and three territories
  • Mayoral races in cities across the country

More than 40 sitting House and Senate members are retiring, opening seats that have been locked up by Republicans for years. In many of these places, Democrats have been steadily winning at the local level since 2025, changing the red landscape to blue.

Do Democrats stand a chance in the midterms?

Democrats have a genuine, achievable path to flipping the House, the Senate, and statehouses that seemed untouchable just a few years ago.

The path runs through states with races that will be decided by a few thousand votes, and sometimes only a few hundred. Even in solidly red states, Democratic candidates have come out in force, giving voters a real choice for their futures, and overseas voters are squarely part of that equation.

The actions are simple: request a ballot, choose email delivery, and return it electronically if possible. Returning by mail? It’s not too late!

Talk to your friends and family - no matter where in the world you live, every single ballot counts.

This can be the election where voices from every corner of the world make the difference.
