How an IB Diploma opens doors in Switzerland and worldwide
For many expat families in Switzerland with children approaching university, one question looms large when choosing an international school in Basel: If we move again, or stay in Switzerland, will our children's qualifications be fully recognised?
It is a fair question, and is the exact problem the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme was designed to solve.
How the IB Diploma prepares students for university and life
At International School Basel (ISB), the IB Diploma Programme offered in the final two years of school (Grade 11 and 12) is built around one idea: preparing students not just to pass exams, but for university and life beyond.
Alongside six subjects, students complete three core requirements as part of the programme: an extended essay, a theory of knowledge course and a programme of creativity, activity and service.
Universities consistently point to this practical combination when explaining why they value IB graduates as independent thinkers who can research, write and manage their own workload from day one.
ISB delivers strong academic results
The IB Diploma's global reputation is matched by strong academic performance. Highlights from the ISB class of 2026 include:
- 98 percent pass rate: 118 out of 124 students earned the full IB Diploma, well above the global average.
- 35,2 average point score: Exceeding worldwide benchmarks out of a maximum 45 points.
- Top performers: 21 percent of the cohort scored 40 points or higher, including one student achieving a perfect score of 45.
- Bilingual diploma excellence: 23 percent earned the prestigious Bilingual IB Diploma, reflecting ISB's English-German programme.
Top university destinations in Switzerland and abroad
Strong results only matter if they open the right doors, and the class of 2026's university offers tell a successful story. Across the 124 graduates in this cohort, 320 university offers were received, with applications to institutions in 20 different countries.
Switzerland remains one of ISB's most popular destinations, with nearly 15 percent of graduates choosing Swiss University destinations, including Basel, St Gallen, Lausanne and Geneva.
At the same time, ISB's global reach gives students access to premier global institutions. Over the past five years, ISB graduates have been accepted to 15 of the world's top 20 universities, and more than 325 universities worldwide have welcomed an ISB graduate, from the London School of Economics and Imperial College London to ETH Zürich, Georgetown and beyond.
Expert advice adapted to each student
None of this happens by accident. From Grade 10 onwards, the school’s university counselling team works closely with students on subject choices, personal statements and interview preparation, and hosts a yearly university fair that brings more than 100 institutions to campus.
Students also have access to specialist guidance for competitive routes such as Oxbridge, medicine and veterinary science.
“We work with each student one-on-one, taking the time to really understand how they think and what drives them. That individual attention helps them uncover strengths they might not have recognised on their own.” Sonja Bhan, Head of university counselling at ISB
Just as importantly, the team knows the full IB Diploma is not the only option: some students choose IB Certificates and ISB Courses instead, and others take a gap year before starting university. Every pathway is valid, and every student is supported in finding the one that fits them.
Whether your family plans to move to Basel, or you already live here, the takeaway is clear: an IB Diploma from ISB doesn't tie a student to one country or one system. It is a qualification that opens doors both to Swiss universities and leading institutions around the world.
